Artist BIO
Puanani Owan
I am a queer person of color of diverse ancestry, and supremely grateful to have grown up on the naturally and culturally rich island of Oʻahu. But my youth was also fraught with silent and terrifying peril, and my burning hunger to thrive and be free brought me to seek solace in Nature and the Creative Spirit. They are my greatest source of inspiration.
I saturate my art with raw Big Bang energy- an explosion of color, movement, density, expansiveness and rhythmic patterns pulsating towards the unpredictable.
The transparency, fluidity, and semi-unruly nature of inks and watercolors, and the precision, blend-ability, grit and youthfulness of colored pencils, markers, wax and oil based crayons are a play-filled match for my experimental impulses.
When my curiosity leans towards the representational, mixed-media collage satisfies that craving. With collage I feel like a magician, alchemizing bits of the universe in infinitely wild ways.
