Sue Carlson
For long-time Palm Beach County artist, Sue Carlson, the �dog house� is her favorite place to be. It�s the name of her new art studio, where she captures the spirit and personality of man�s best friend on wood, cut to life size and painted front and back with acrylic.
Carlson has been making dog art for decades. Shortly after graduating from art school, she
started Petraits, Ink. She created commissioned pen-and-ink dog portraits, several of which
were featured in national publications and exhibited at the Palm Beach James Hunt Barker
Gallery.
In 2008 her dog art business evolved into Art Van Go, Inc. Carlson, a former art teacher at
several area private schools, taught fine art to children ages 4-18. She hosted after school
programs, summer camps and parties at her studios in West Palm Beach and later Lake Park.
�When the pandemic prevented group activities, I closed my studio and enjoyed being a
student myself,� said Carlson, who took art classes online through the nationally-recognized
Yellow Barn Studio in Glen Echo, Md. �I started experimenting with new painting techniques
and materials.�
New artistic approaches � plus Carlson�s new orange-and-white English cocker spaniel named Pinkerton-inspired her latest line of pet art. In addition to wood cut-outs, Carlson creates expressive abstracts on canvas and offers art lessons to all ages. Carlson�s Dog House Studio is part of the Zero Empty Spaces initiative that turns vacant spaces into affordable art studios. The enclave at Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens houses more than 20 artists. Meet Carlson and the other artists at an open studio event every 2 nd Saturday of the month.
